3 common examples of gender bias in the workplace

Gender equality in the workplace is a major issue. As a woman in the workplace, you may deal with gender bias at your job. Biases make the workplaceuncomfortable. Discrimination and prejudice against women have no place in any industry or profession.

When you are in an environment that is mostly male-dominated, it can be difficult to spot these issues and confront them. Here are three common types of gender bias you may face at your job.

1. Interview questions

When you sit down for a job interview, you expect to receive questions relevant to the position. It is normal for the interviewer to ask you about your experience, qualifications and career goals. If you get questions about pregnancy or having children, it may be because of gender bias. Most men do not get questions about having children because it does not actually impact the job.

2. Unequal pay

Unfortunately, women generally make less than men for the same work. If you find out a male employee with your same position is making a higher hourly rate, you may be furious. This is a sign your employer may not value female employees as much as male employees.

3. Diminished or relinquished responsibilities

The responsibilities of a position should be the same for anyone, regardless of gender. While you should not be afraid to ask for help if you need it, no one should take your responsibilities away from you. If male co-workers or supervisors start to complete your tasks for you, this may be an indication that they do not take you seriously. There should not be unequal responsibilities because of gender, period.

Coming to terms with gender bias at your job can be jarring. It is a situation no one wants to deal with, but remember that you have the right to a fair and comfortable workplace.
