What to do when your job causes anxiety

Work can be incredibly stressful. Your job may involve meeting strict deadlines, balancing your work and personal life, meeting high expectations and dealing with politics and gossip. A stressful work environment can even cause or contribute to an anxiety disorder.

According to WebMD, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Excessive or unrealistic worries
  • Jitteriness
  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • Racing heartbeat
  • Fatigue

There are many reasons why your job may be taking a toll on your mental health. Here are some steps to take if your job is causing anxiety.

Talk to someone

You may find some relief by talking to a trustworthy co-worker. This person may be able to relate to you and offer some comfort and advice. You can also discuss your feelings with a family member or friend. Talking about your experience with the right individual can help you process your emotions and receive some validation. Make sure the person you go to is generally understanding and supportive. You do not want to talk to someone who will belittle or brush off your experience.

Seek professional help

If your anxiety is interfering with your work and personal life, it may be useful to see a mental health professional. Counselors and therapists exist to help people just like you sort through complex emotions and become stronger. You may be able to learn healthy coping mechanisms.

Consider whether there are legal problems

It is normal to feel stress at work sometimes, but if it is pervasive and overwhelming, it may be because of an employment law issue. For example, harassment, discrimination, retaliation or unpaid wages may cause you to feel anxious. Do not overlook any problem that may be unlawful. In this situation, you may be able to file complaints and pursue lawsuits in order to receive monetary compensation. You do not need to put up with a work environment that causes you to suffer.
